Back when country bars were built for dancing instead of photographing your cocktail, Toolies Country kept West Phoenix moving seven nights a week.
Opening near 43rd Avenue and Thomas Road in 1981, Toolies became one of the city’s best-known country saloons and dance halls. It offered live country music every night, free dance lessons twice a week and the sort of roomy dance floor where beginners, regulars and visiting road warriors could all attempt the two-step without filing paperwork first.
The club also became a Phoenix stop for nationally known and rising country acts. Documented performers include Asleep at the Wheel, Jerry Jeff Walker, Toby Keith and the Charlie Daniels Band, while longtime locals remember it as an important showcase for artists passing through town.
This vintage-inspired tee brings back Toolies’ wonderfully laid-back cowboy mascot, bold retro lettering and original West Thomas Road location. The weathered red, blue, yellow and black artwork has the comfortable look of a shirt bought after a late set, worn through several hundred dances and miraculously rescued before somebody turned the old place into retail space.
Wear it to the rodeo, the dance hall, the record store or anywhere that could benefit from a reclining cowboy who appears to have permanently cleared his afternoon schedule.
