Before tiki had fully learned its gods, mugs, and secret-rum vocabulary, Hollywood was already selling the tropics like a studio set with a liquor license. The Tropics sat at Vine and Sunset with a pitch made for the picture business: “Informal Cocktail Lounge & Dining Room of the Motion Picture Industry.” Subtle? Not especially. Effective? Absolutely.

This design revives the lounge’s wonderfully cinematic promise: palms, thatched roofs, studio-backlot tropical scenery, and the slogan that says the whole quiet part out loud: “The atmosphere does something for everybody.” It is not just a restaurant graphic. It is Hollywood teaching nightlife how to behave like a location.

Product details: vintage-inspired pre-tiki graphic tee featuring The Tropics cocktail lounge and dining room artwork from Vine at Sunset in Hollywood, California. Designed for fans of lost Los Angeles restaurants, Hollywood nightlife, pre-tiki history, tropical cocktail lounges, vintage restaurant ephemera, film-industry hangouts, and old graphics that look like they were lit by a studio gaffer.

The Story Behind the Shirt

The Tropics belongs to the Hollywood chapter of pre-tiki, when tropical nightlife was still closer to studio fantasy than codified Polynesian pop. Its own advertising called it an “informal cocktail lounge & dining room of the motion picture industry,” and the artwork leaned into that idea: palms, island huts, cinematic atmosphere, and a location at Vine at Sunset, right in the machinery of old Hollywood. This was the era when restaurants borrowed from movie sets, scenic backdrops, fake palms, and the South Seas imagination to make ordinary urban rooms feel like temporary escape.
