Before Sunset Strip swagger learned to wear cowboy boots, The Palomino Club was already rattling the rafters in North Hollywood.
Opened in 1949 at 6907 Lankershim Boulevard, the Palomino became the beating heart of West Coast country music, a gloriously unpolished room where working cowboys, studio musicians, movie stars and late-night wanderers crowded around the same dance floor. The Los Angeles Times remembered it as the region’s essential country nightclub, while performers ranging from Johnny Cash and Buck Owens to Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris and Dwight Yoakam helped build its legend.
And the walls did not recognize musical borders. Over the years, the Palomino welcomed country royalty, cowpunk rebels, rockabilly renegades and surprise visitors including Bob Dylan, George Harrison and John Fogerty. It even became a familiar Hollywood location, appearing in films such as Every Which Way but Loose and Hooper. The doors finally closed in 1995, ending a remarkable 46-year run, but the old horse still refuses to leave the corral.
This vintage-inspired tee revives an original Palomino advertisement complete with its bucking bronco, Lankershim Boulevard address, “Dancing Nightly” invitation and wonderfully confident claim to be Los Angeles’ Largest Award Winning Night Club. Printed with a softly weathered finish, it feels less like souvenir merchandise and more like something rescued from the trunk of a ’58 Ford after one very long Saturday night.
Wear it dancing, record hunting, prowling old Los Angeles, or anywhere a little honky-tonk history might improve the scenery. 🤠
