Long before Phoenix nightlife became polished, bottle-serviced and suspiciously well behaved, Mr. Lucky’s ruled Grand Avenue beneath a fifty-foot neon jester.
Opened in 1966 by Arizona restaurateur Bob Sikora, the enormous two-level nightclub offered country music and dancing upstairs, with rock and pop acts downstairs. Its wonderfully simple invitation was: Come as you are. No velvet rope, no admission charge most weeknights, and apparently no need to choose between cowboy boots and rock ’n’ roll.
Mr. Lucky’s became one of Arizona’s legendary live-music rooms, welcoming performers including Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Glen Campbell, Wanda Jackson and Charley Pride. Jackson even recorded a live album there in 1969. The club’s house musicians also helped make it a genuine local institution rather than merely another stop on the touring circuit.
The original club survived for nearly four decades, later adding an outdoor rodeo arena before finally closing in 2004. Its towering roadside sign and strange, sprawling building remain embedded in Phoenix memory, a little neon kingdom where country lived upstairs and rock prowled below.
This vintage-inspired tee revives an original Mr. Lucky’s advertisement, complete with the domino logo, “The King of Clubs” slogan, Grand Avenue address, Johnny Cash billing and the promise of live country and rock music until the small hours.
Printed in weathered dark brown and red on a cool turquoise tee, it looks like something you might have bought after the last set, then worn straight into breakfast.
