Miss Kitty’s Saloon & Dance Hall – Marietta, Georgia – Vintage Country Dance Tee

Before Atlanta country nightlife became polished, packaged, and politely roped off, there was Miss Kitty’s Saloon & Dance Hall in Marietta.

Miss Kitty’s was part honky-tonk, part dance hall, part glorious suburban escape hatch. Located on Franklin Road, it gave the west side of Atlanta somewhere to pull on the boots, hear live country and Southern rock, shoot pool, and dance without making the pilgrimage into Buckhead. Period recollections describe the place as packed, lively, and occasionally just a little blurry around the edges.

And Miss Kitty’s has a genuine place in Georgia music history. The musicians who became Confederate Railroad spent years as the house band there before signing with Atlantic and breaking nationally in the early 1990s. Their Miss Kitty’s years were part of the long Atlanta-bar apprenticeship that helped forge the band’s rowdy blend of country and Southern rock.

The club’s roots reach back at least into the mid-1980s. The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History even holds Miss Kitty’s material from 1985 in its International Battle of the Bands archive. That is a pretty respectable paper trail for a place where plenty of people apparently lost track of theirs.

This tee resurrects one of Miss Kitty’s wonderfully period graphics, complete with its Western saloon lettering and glamorous feline dance-hall hostess. Printed with a worn-in vintage character on a Comfort Colors shirt, it feels less like newly manufactured merch and more like something rescued from the back of a drawer after one particularly memorable Saturday night in Marietta.

For Georgia country-music people, line dancers, honky-tonk historians, former Miss Kitty’s regulars, and anyone who believes the best dance floors come with a little sawdust in their DNA.

Pull on your boots. Miss Kitty’s is open again, at least on your shirt.
