The Leilani was one of them.
Part supper club, part motel, part fantasy transport device, it promised Polynesian floorshows, rum drinks, flaming torches, and an evening temporarily disconnected from the Eisenhower era waiting outside in the parking lot. Places like this appeared across the mainland after WWII, borrowing pieces of Hawai‘i, Tahiti, Hollywood, and pure invention until the entire thing became its own strange beautiful genre.
This graphic feels lifted straight from a souvenir menu cover somebody kept folded in a kitchen drawer for sixty years. Hula dancers mid-song. Communal luaŭ tables buried under pineapple and cocktails. Tiki idols staring blankly over the whole operation like ancient gods supervising happy hour.
And then there’s the motel angle. That’s the detail that really dates it. Because midcentury America believed the ideal vacation involved sleeping twenty feet from a giant rum barrel.
