The Kon-Tiki was part restaurant, part theatrical escape hatch. One of those midcentury rooms built to convince cold-weather cities they were temporarily closer to Tahiti than New Jersey. The architecture did most of the seduction. Giant carved archways. Idol figures guarding the entrance. Lettering that looked stolen from an adventure serial.

This graphic captures the exact kind of storefront fantasy that made tiki irresistible in the atomic age. Not authentic Polynesia. Better, somehow. Hollywood’s idea of Polynesia filtered through Broadway money and three mai tais.
