The Story Behind the Shirt
The original Kauai Surf Hotel opened at Kalapaki Beach in Lihue in 1960, part of the great mid-century Hawaiian resort boom that sold travelers a polished dream of palms, beach days, golf, and tropical ease. Over the decades, the property changed names and costumes, becoming the Kauai Westin, then the Kauai Marriott, and later part of the Royal Sonesta / Marriott Beach Club campus. This design reaches back to the earlier Kauai Surf era, when a simple matchbook could carry the whole vacation: a golfer, a shoreline, a few palms, and the dangerous suggestion that work could wait.
