Some tiki bars felt carefully designed. Hukilau felt like it grew there.

What began in the 1960s as the Islander Village Restaurant & Tiki Lounge slowly evolved into one of the great labyrinths of Florida tiki culture. Rooms connected to other rooms at strange angles. Rooflines wandered wherever they pleased. Tropical overgrowth crept toward the walls until the whole place started looking less like architecture and more like a secret somebody accidentally left running for forty years.

At the center sat the round bar beneath towering beams and carved poles, radiating the exact kind of low-lit energy that convinces perfectly reasonable adults to order “just one more” sometime around midnight. Witco stools surrounded the room like wooden guardians. Nautical chains hung where normal restaurants would have used restraint. Orchids of Hawaii swag lamps glowed overhead in deep amber light. Even the bar itself had a subtly slanted front edge, one of those oddly specific details regulars still remember decades later because great tiki places were always a little strange in exactly the right ways.

By the end it had become Paco’s Hukilau, changing names, changing hands, mutating room by room until the place finally closed in December 2000. The jungle came back out. The artifacts scattered. The illusion broke apart.

But the feeling survived.

This design captures the advertising version of Hukilau: the promise, the glow, the fantasy before the parking lot emptied for good. Rendered in deep vintage green with engraving-style linework and distressed print texture, it feels like a surviving newspaper ad clipped out and folded into somebody’s wallet for twenty years.

This isn’t polished tiki nostalgia. It’s for the people who love the weird ones. The overgrown ones. The places that barely held together structurally but somehow held together emotionally.

Wear it like the night never actually ended.

Because somewhere between Islander Village and Paco’s…
it probably didn’t.
