Before tiki became a genre, it existed as a mood.

Before the bamboo temples, carved idols, neon lagoons, and souvenir mugs, Los Angeles had places like the Driftwood Room quietly teaching people how to disappear for an evening. Hidden inside the legendary Hotel Lankershim at Seventh and Broadway, the lounge operated during the 1930s while downtown LA was still inventing its own mythology in real time.

And then it vanished almost completely.

No confirmed interior photos. No surviving postcards. No cinematic documentation of the room itself. Just scattered references, a surviving 1936 menu, and the strange gravitational pull certain lost places continue to exert decades after demolition crews finish the job. The Hotel Lankershim itself was once one of the most important hotels in Los Angeles, a sprawling operation with hundreds of rooms, hundreds of servants, and the confidence of a city convinced it was becoming the future. Today the site is a parking structure because Los Angeles occasionally treats its own history like evidence to dispose of quickly.

This design leans into that beautiful absence with distressed halftone texture, old newspaper-ad energy, and the atmosphere of something rescued from a coat pocket after a long night downtown. Less polished nostalgia. More archaeological fragment.

The Driftwood Room wasn’t tiki yet. That’s what makes it fascinating.

It was the rehearsal.

The moment before tropical escapism became an industry. Before the rules hardened. Before anyone realized they were building an American fantasy that would outlive the room itself.

Some places survive in photographs. Others survive because people can’t stop imagining them.
