Chin Tiki – Detroit’s Lost Polynesian Palace – Vintage Tee

Before downtown Detroit became glass, steel, and stadium lights, there was a waterfall running through a tiki temple on Cass Avenue.

Opened in 1966 by former Ford engineer Marvin Chin, the Chin Tiki was a full-scale Polynesian supper club, nightclub, and banquet hall built with towering carved figures, bamboo bridges, artificial rock walls, glowing aquarium murals, and enough tropical atmosphere to make a Michigan winter briefly reconsider its career choices. Chin designed much of the restaurant himself, turning engineering into escapism and 2121 Cass Avenue into one of Detroit’s great midcentury disappearing acts.

Upstairs, live musicians played beneath rattan and lava-rock scenery while Hawaiian dancers and fire performers worked the floor. Downstairs, bartenders poured Fog Cutters, Shark’s Teeth, Head Hunters, the house Chin Tiki Punch, and an enormous communal Chin Tiki Special served in a clamshell with long straws and crowned with a gardenia. It was less dinner than temporary relocation.

The doors closed in 1980, but the interior remained sealed for roughly two decades, its statues, fixtures, and half-empty bottles waiting in the dark like a tropical time capsule. The abandoned building later appeared in 8 Mile, briefly placing the lost palace back in front of the world before it was demolished in 2009.

This vintage-inspired tee resurrects the Chin Tiki’s bold Cass Avenue identity with distressed sign-painting texture, a carved idol, and the original Detroit address. It is wearable evidence from a place where automotive ingenuity met rum, fire, waterfalls, and one gloriously overcommitted idea of a night out.

For Detroit locals, tiki historians, cocktail devotees, and anyone who believes every great city deserves at least one vanished palace with a clamshell punch bowl.
