Makaha International Surf Championships – Hawai‘i 1962 – Vintage Surf Tee

Before professional surfing became a global industry, there was Makaha.

Held on O‘ahu’s rugged west side, the Makaha International Surfing Championships were among the first truly world-famous surf competitions, helping transform surfing from regional beach culture into an international phenomenon. Throughout the 1950s and early ’60s, surfers from California, Australia, and Hawai‘i converged at Makaha to test themselves against massive winter waves and each other.

And 1962 sits right in the middle of that golden era.

This wasn’t polished corporate surf culture yet. No energy drinks. No influencer compounds. Just heavy wooden boards evolving into fiberglass rockets, photographers standing waist-deep in shore break, and crowds watching from the beach as surfers disappeared into Hawaiian walls of water that looked genuinely capable of ending careers.
